Vice President
Inaugurates two day Hali Mela
The Hali Mela was inaugurated by the Vice President of India, Shri M.
Hamid Ansari, at the Hali Park in Panipat today. After declaring the Mela
as open, Shri Ansari, launched a website dedicated to the great Urdu Poet
and social reformer, Khwaja Altaf Hussain Hali 'Panipati'. The function
presided by Governor Dr. A. R. Kidwai was attended by many dignitaries
like Prasar Bharati Chairman, Arun Bhatnagar and Former
Finance Minister of Pakistan, Dr Mubashir Hassan. Chief Minister Shri
Bhupender Singh Hooda was the Guest of Honour.
The Mela and Hali website are among a series of initiatives being
undertaken by the Hali Panipati Trust to spread the ideals and philosophy
of Maulana Hali. The Trust has even come out with a calendar commemorating
Maulana Hali.
"Almost 150 years ago Maulana Hali highlighted the need for reforms
among Muslims and spread the message of communal harmony and empowerment of women.
His writings are of great relevance to our world today. The youth need to
be acquainted with them," explained Dr Syeda Hameed, Member of Planning
Commission and Chairman of the Trust. And this is precisely what the Hali
Mela seeks to do through seminars, competition for school kids and
cultural events spread over two days.
A similar event had been organized on December 23, 1985. Inaugurated by the then
President Shri Giani Zail Singh, it had been attended by Governor S.M.H.
